Real estate photography

Ybor City, Florida.

About 10 minutes from our base · no travel fee

Ybor City is the one part of Hillsborough County where the standard real estate shot list is close to useless. There is no front lawn to frame, no driveway to shoot from, and on most of the historic blocks no way to stand far enough back to get a clean square-on elevation without standing in the middle of a one-way brick street. What sells here is character, and character is a detail problem rather than a wide-angle problem.

The housing splits three ways. There are the restored 1900s casitas and shotgun cottages on the residential streets north and east of Seventh Avenue, small footprints where a wide lens will distort a room into something the buyer will not recognize when they walk in. There are the cigar factory and warehouse conversions, which are the opposite problem: twenty foot ceilings, enormous industrial windows, exposed brick and original timber, and a dynamic range between the window and the back wall that a single exposure cannot hold. Those interiors have to be bracketed and blended, and often flashed as well, or you either lose the brick to shadow or blow the window into white. Then there is the newer infill, townhomes and small condo buildings, where the selling point is usually the roof deck and the skyline view rather than the unit itself.

Two practical constraints shape scheduling here. Ybor sits under Tampa International's controlled airspace, so any aerial work needs authorisation arranged before the shoot rather than on the day. And the district is busy: pedestrians, parked cars and delivery vans are in almost every street-facing frame, which is why exterior work here starts early on a weekday morning.

We shoot throughout the historic district and out into Ybor Heights, V.M. Ybor and the blocks running toward Palmetto Beach. If the listing is walking distance to Seventh Avenue, Centro Ybor, the Columbia, Centennial Park or the streetcar line into Channelside and downtown, that is worth saying when you book, because walkability is the whole pitch here and it deserves an aerial that shows the property in the context of the district rather than a roofline in isolation.
